Cataract, a Great Threat to the Elderly

Cataract, a serious threat to the health of the elderly, refers to a disease that people couldn’t see objects in the front clearly because the lenses become feculent. Crystal oxidative damage is said to be the initial factor of its formation. Studies have found that cataract is caused by varied reasons. As human life expectancy increases, our elderly who suffer from cataract will get a corresponding increase.

Cataract will not only affect patients’ visual acuity and quality of life, but also eventually lead to blindness in patients ( on a global scale, age-related cataract is the major cause of blindness ), which causes great burden on society. Therefore, the concern about the health of the elderly, in particular about the occurrence and development of senile cataract, is a major event of the whole society.

Today, more and more elderly are suffering from cataract, partially because of their inappropriate glasses. In some cases, the old people just pick up one pair of eyeglasses casually to help themselves see objects clearly, without paying close attention to the specific requirements of glasses. Generally, the regulatory function of their eyes has partially or completely disappeared, thus, for respectively the close- and distant-vision, senile people require different strengths. If not correctly examined and adjusted, the elderly will easily suffer from cataract after a long term. Therefore, senile people must wear appropriate eyeglasses for the prevention of this serious disease.
