Nutritional Factors in Preventing Cataract
We talked about the severe cataract among the elderly and the importance of appropriate glasses in the prevention of cataract in last post. Now, let’s move to nutritional factors in preventing cataract, which are also worthy of great attention. A healthy and well-balanced diet would be beneficial to the eye health. In daily nutrition, senile people should note the following points to prevent cataract.

First, the elderly should eat more foods that are rich in vitamin C. Scientists have found that vitamin C plays an important role in the prevention of cataract. It can reduce the damage of light and oxygen on crystals. Foods that are rich in vitamin C include tomatoes, spinach, onions, cabbage, green beans and strawberries, oranges, grapefruit and so on.
Second, foods that are rich in selenium can help to increase visual acuity; while, the lack of selenium can induce lens opacities that will lead to cataracts. This fact has already been confirmed by scientists. Selenium-rich foods involve fish, shrimp, milk, animal liver, meat and nuts, etc.
The last but not least, having more tea is also helpful to prevent cataract. In a large number of observations, physicians have found out that it is less likely for the elderly who take tea more often to suffer from cataract. Medicine has proved that it is the tannic acid contained in the tea that helps to block the oxidation of free radicals, so tea also shows its role of effective prevention of cataract.
Anyhow, the elderly should keep a healthy diet and pay close attention to the nutrition; meanwhile, in order to effectively prevent cataract, never forget that a pair of right suitable eyeglasses is important, too.
